3 Common Dentist Myths Debunked

Oral health is so incredibly important, but one of the most integral components of maintaining your health is through going to the dentist- and yet so many of us fear dental trips. At Eden Rise Dental, we decided to uncover the truth. So let’s get down to the bottom of this: why do so many people feel anxious when it comes to going to the dentist?

Myth #1: Going to the dentist will be painful

There are many reasons why we may feel anxiety about going to the dentist- one of which is pain. Unless you’re one of the lucky few that have had no dental work done, quite a few of us have some experience with discomfort at past visits to the dentist. But this memory is often exaggerated. The truth is, dentists actually don’t want to cause you pain! Particularly as technology advances, the pain that may have once come along with a procedure lessens. The important thing to remember is that you should communicate. If you’re experiencing pain, it’s okay to tell the dentist. They’ll be able to give you a local anesthetic so that the rest of the trip is relatively painless.

Myth #2: My dentist will judge me!

Second to pain, but still an essential factor of the anxiety that surrounds trips to the dentists, is the fear that our dentists will judge us. I mean, who hasn’t been at the other end of being told you don’t floss enough? But realistically, dentists are here to guide us to better oral health, and one such way to do so is to provide us with information on what we’re doing wrong that we can improve. So show up, don’t be nervous! There’s no reason to be embarrassed when visiting the dentist- they’re there to help.

Myth #3: Dental appointments cost too much

It’s true- dental appointments can be expensive. But these extensive costs can largely be avoided if you simply go to the dentist twice a year. Oh, and don’t forget to brush, floss and care for your oral health all round. Many larger expenses such as fillings can be prevented if we visit our dentists as required, so that they can give us an update on what’s going on in our mouths.

There are many other myths associated with going to the dentist, but we’ve covered three of the most common ones. If you’re still not convinced, why not head over the Eden Rise Dental? Our friendly team is located in Berwick, and can assist with your dental needs.
